On This Day — June 21

On This Day — June 21 is a 62-page book about June 21st, the official first day of summer, and the various holidays and anniversaries which are celebrated.


I started my process by researching and collecting articles and images for seven different events that are featured in the book. The seven events are the Summer Solstice, World Hydrography Day, the very first WNBA game, the anniversary  of the first computer to run its own program, the anniversary od the first Ferris wheel, National Seashell Day, and International Yoga Day.

Sketches:

After collecting all the necessary pieces, I began sketching different ideas for the book’s layout and dimensions. I decided on a square to best showcase the radial imagery used throughout the book.

For my first draft, I tried keeping the images in their original colors, but later switched to applying orange and blue gradient maps to reinforce the color scheme.

I chose blue and orange specifically because I wanted to focus on the colors of the sun and the sky, due to how the summer solstice and the first day of summer are important to the events showcased throughout.

The final book is perfect bound and printed on 90lb matte paper. The cover wraps around the book and is printed on a heavier and slightly glossier paper.
