The Rack Percussion
The Rack Percussion is an educational project aimed at introducing people to the world of percussion. The project consists of a website, a short zine, promotional instagram animations, an AR interactive hardcover encyclopedia, and stickers.
Visual Identity
The Rack’s visual identity consists of bright red, yellow, and orange, with contrasting accents of black and blue. These colors were chosen because of how vivid and loud they were, similar to the energy of loud percussion instruments.
The typeface DoubleBass is used for various large display titles and headings. The typeface was chosen for its dynamic jazzy style letters which fit together and flow like music notes. Gambado Sans is used for various smaller subheadings for its similar musical style.
Other elements include repeated lines reminiscent of both soundwaves and a musical staff, circular elements that convey movement and sound, and photographs of instruments that stand out against the otherwise flat graphical styles.
Website
The Rack: A Percussion Instrument Archive is a digital collection of interactive percussion instruments. The collection consists of different instruments from around the world. The website’s main audience is people who are unfamiliar with the world of percussion and its goal is to spark curiosity and encourage exploration through fun interactive elements.
The homepage features a list of 35 instruments that people can click on and learn more about and instructions on how to interact with the site. Further down are photos of each instrument that can be dragged around, rearranged, and reorganized however you want.
When people click on an instrument to learn more, they are brought to an internal page that lists info about the instrument's construction and origin as well as a description about the instrument, its history, and how it is used and played.
The internal instruments pages also feature interactive hover effects that play sound effects and animations that let people hear what an instrument sounds like and see how it is played.
Zine
The promotional zine features an interview with a percussionist. While its contents are different from the other parts of the project, it has the same purpose of introducing percussion to a new audience.
The back of the zine features a three page sticker sheet of instruments mentioned throughout the interview and a qr code that encourages people to visit the website and learn more.
The inside of the zine is printed on a risograph in red and yellow. The outside uses a scanimation technique that changes the instruments shown on the cover as the dust jacket is slid up and down.
Animated Instragram posts were also created to promote the release of the zine featuring various elements from the zine and website.
Encyclopedia
The Rack’s Percussion Book: An Encyclopedia of Percussion Instruments is a large 18” x 18” hardcover book. It features information from The Rack’s website but in a new format.
The encyclopedia continues the playful explorative nature of the project through interactive AR (Augmented Reality) elements which lets people use their phone’s camera to see each instrument's animations and hear how they’re played.
The encyclopedia also features a pocket full of stickers. Each sticker features an instrument on the front and fast facts on the back. The purpose of the stickers is for them to be small and easily passed out and shared with new audiences.
